A Certain Magical Index Expo Displays Artwork From Entire Franchise

posted on by Kim Morrissy

The A Certain Magical Index franchise is currently holding a "Toaru Majutsu to Kagaku no Expo" (A Certain Magical and Scientific Expo) event at the Movida shop in Tokyo's Seibu Shibuya department store. The venue displays artwork from the entirety of the franchise's history, from the original light novel covers to the anime and the various manga spinoffs. Here's a closer look at what you can see inside.

A walkway shows a collage of screencaps from all the seasons of A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun so far.

Stands of Kuroko, Misaka, Touma, and Index are at the end of the hall, doing the poses shown in the event's key visual.

A wall displays the key animation frames from the OP of A Certain Magical Index III.

Another few walls show character, backgrounds, and prop designs from A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun.

Up next are walls displaying art from the various manga titles: A Certain Magical Index, Toaru Nichijou no Index-san ("A Certain Everyday Index"), Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On ("A Certain Magical Virtual-On"), A Certain Scientific Accelerator, and A Certain Scientific Railgun.

The covers of all the A Certain Magical Index volumes released so far are also shown on display.

Outside of the mini art gallery, there are a few other things of note. You'll find costumes for the main female characters lines up near the wall. From left to right: Sakugawa Middle School uniform (Uiharu and Saten's school), Tokiwadai Middle School uniform (Misaka and Kuroko's school), and Index's habit.

Misaka, Touma, and Index also get another photo spot for themselves, this time with one of the iconic windmills from Academy City.

The windmills even make an appearance in the shop adjacent to the expo!

Finally, there was a whiteboard where fans could leave their messages of appreciation. Many fans took the opportunity to draw their favorite characters. Misaka's popularity was assured, but my heart is warmed to see so much love for the frog mascot Gekota as well.

The event is free to enter, but the expo has been holding special talk events with various voice actors from the anime, which you can only attend if you win a lottery. You have to spend at least 3,000 yen (about US$27) in the store to enter the lottery. The final talk show on the 24th will feature Rina Satō (who plays Misaka) and Satomi Arai (Kuroko), and the expo will end on November 25. For more details plus the list of items available for purchase at the shop, visit the A Certain Magical Index's website.

Kamachi's A Certain Magical Index light novel series has inspired three television anime series, a 2013 anime film, and multiple manga adaptations. Motoi Fuyukawa's A Certain Scientific Railgun spinoff manga has also inspired two television anime adaptations and an original video anime (OVA). A Certain Magical Index III is currently airing and Crunchyroll is streaming the series simultaneously with Japan. The third season of the A Certain Scientific Railgun anime is slated for 2019 along with the A Certain Scientific Accelerator anime.
