13-Year-Old Manga Artist Makes Debut in Bessatsu Margaret Magazine

posted on by Kim Morrissy

A 13-year-old artist named Nana Hoshiki made her debut in the March 2019 Bessatsu Margaret Magazine, which went on sale on February 13. Hoshiki was the winner of Bessatsu Margaret's 609th "Manga School" competition, which is held every month for the purpose of debuting new artists. Her 16-page manuscript, titled The Tidings of Snow (Inshin no Yuki), was published in the magazine.

The manga tells the story of a girl who doesn't like or dislike anything. One day, she waits at the station with a cheerful boy and realizes that maybe she does like snow after all.

Although Bessatsu Margaret regularly holds manga competitions aimed specifically at middle school and high school students, Hoshiki's submission is notable because it won the regular monthly competition with no age restrictions. Readers have praised her high-quality, which is impressive even among adult artists.

Bessatsu Margaret publishes a debut work from a new artist every month. Story manga submissions must be 16 pages, while gag manga submissions must be between 8 to 16 pages.
