Virtual YouTuber Kaguya Luna Breaks Guinness World Record By Holding Livestream at Highest Altitude

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Virtual YouTuber Kaguya Luna has entered the Guinness World Records by holding a livestream using a smartphone at the highest altitude on Monday. The stream occurred on June 24, 11:30 pm JST, which is UFO day in Japan.

Kaguya Luna was accompanied on her trip skyward by a packet of Nissin Yakisoba UFO noodles. In the stream, a smartphone showing a livestream of Kaguya Luna was launched into the air via helium balloon. The program concluded when Kaguya Luna was at 26 km above sea level, but she eventually reached a peak of 30 km by the end of the stream.

Although the show was marketed as Kaguya Luna's journey into "outer space," her peak altitude is still within the Earth's stratosphere. The previous record was 18.42 km above sea level. The moment Kaguya Luna breaks the record is captured in the stream from 1:22:29 onward.

According to Nissin Yakisoba's website, the project had the support of Nasa - not the National Aeronautics and Space Administration but a mountain-shaped snack. Also, the UFO noodles packet Kaguya Luna lifted off with was called "UFO Unit 01." Incidentally, Nissin's UFO stands for Umai (Tasty), Futoi (Thick), and Ōkī (Large).

Kaguya Luna has previously collaborate with Nissin for a wacky advertisement and a commercial presentation.
