Studio Trigger's Takafumi Hori Worked on Steven Universe Movie

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Fans can thank Studio Trigger's Takafumi Hori for the amazing action sequences in Steven Universe: The Movie that premiered on September 2. Creator Rebecca Sugar told ComicBook.com that Hori returned to the show after previously collaborating on the "Mindful Education" episode.

"The Other Friends and Change sequences are incredible because we got to collaborate with Takafumi Hori. He did the animation for those sequences. It's just phenomenal. Miki Brewster boarded Other Friends...Change was the last song we wrote for the film at the very, very end, and so I worked on that with Jeff Liu as he was storyboarding that sequence," Sugar said.

According to Sugar, Jeff Liu drafted the idea of the Spinel and Steven's fight and Hori brought it to life through animation.

Hori previously worked as an animation director for Kill la Kill, Michiko & Hatchin, and Garo the Animation. He also served as a key animator for Summer Wars, Samurai Champloo, Redline, Space Patrol Luluco, Little Witch Academia, Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade, and Lupin the Third: Jigen's Gravestone, among others.

Steven Universe: The Movie takes place two years after the conclusion of the cartoon series. Steven and the Crystal Gems work together to try to save life on Earth from a new enemy, Spinel.

Sugar recently provided a special intro to the July screenings of Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart film. Sugar is a long-time anime and Studio Ghibli fan.

Thanks to Ty for the news tip.
