UCLA to present "Samurai Cyborgs and Outrageous Babes"

The UCLA Film and Television Archive announced yesterday the final installment of their anime retrospective, to run from May 8 to June 1, 1999. To be called "Samurai Cyborgs and Outrageous Babes," this part of the retrospective will pick up where the first part, "Magical Boys and Girls" left off. The event has been called the largest anime retrospective ever mounted in North America.

The event will start off with a special sneak preview showing of the new film Jin-Roh (fresh from its official premiere at the Berlin Film Festival). The film's director, Hiroyuki Okiura, who also served as animation director for Akira and Ghost in the Shell, will be in attendance. Later, the North American premieres of Blue Submarine No. 6 and Cowboy Bebop from AnimeVillage will be held, as well as a continuation of short films from Osamu Tezuka, some of them rare. North American producer of "Gigantor" (Tetsujin 28) Fred Ladd will also make an appearance.

Screenings will take place at the James Bridges Theater at the Southeast corner of the UCLA campus. Tickets will be made available one hour before showtime for each showing, priced at $6 general and $4 for students and seniors. Those interested can call (310) 206-FILM or visit www.cinema.ucla.edu for more information and a complete schedule.
