Berserk Manga News

posted on by George Phillips
Following on the heels of the recent Berserk manga license, ANN contacted Dark Horse Manga Editor-In-Chief Tim Ervin-Gore about the companies recent acquisition.

Tim Ervin-Gore from Dark Comics spoke to ANN today further clarifying information about Berserk being released in North America. He informed us that Digital Manga will be in charge of translating the series, as well as localizing it, "Similar to what Studio Proteus does for us currentely," he said. No specific street date has been set.

"We hope to announce it on our schedule as soon as possible. Most likely, Berserk will be released straight to trade paperback, but [we're] not 100% certain with that information at this time."

When asked about who actually had the rights to the series Mr. Ervin-Gore explained, "With large manga series such as Berserk, we usually sign a co-licensing deal. Dark Horse and Digital manga will split the profits and royalties for releasing the product in North America. We both share the copyrights."

Mr. Ervin-Gore was under the impression that they had the license for the entire series, but was not able to confirm it at this time. He will be hosting a panel at Sakura-Con early next month and will be able to give more information and details at that time.

Press Release Excerpts:

Dark Horse Comics, in conjunction with Digital Manga, is proud to announce the publication of Kentarō Miura's manga horror/fantasy epic Berserk. One of the most eagerly anticipated manga properties in recent years, Berserk was originally published in Japan by Hakusensha and has been serialized in Young Animal Magazine since the early 1990's. An animated TV series followed in 1998 and Media Blasters announced a U.S. anime acquisition in 2001.

With a release scheduled for fall 2003, Dark Horse and Digital Manga will present Berserk as three volumes in a non-westernized format. Each volume will read from right to left and original Japanese sound effects will remain intact.
