Few Manga at Eisner Awards

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Eisner Award nominations all but snub Manga

Despite being a banner year for Manga sales, and past successes at Eisner awards, this year's Eisner's only include 2 manga related nominations. Dark Horse's Super Manga Blast was nominated for Best Anthology, and Viz's Uzumaki was nominated for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material.

While this year's nominations are notable for the relative absence of Manga, they are also notable for the very noticeble number of independant and self-published comics, as well as the first nomination ever for a web-comic. The winners will be voted on by 4,000 comics publishers, creators, and retailers, with the results will be announced at the San Diego Comic-con on Friday, July 18th.

The complete list of nominees can be seen here.

Last year Dark Horse's Akira won in two categories, Best Archival Collection/Project and Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material and Osaku Tezuka was inducted into the Eisner hall of fame. Also nominated last year were Viz titles Eagle: The Making of an Asian-American President, Uzumaki and Dark Horse's What's Michael?.

Dark Horse's Lone Wolf and Cub manga won the Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material in 2001.
