Japanese Magazine Circulation

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Circulation numbers for the 2003 year released by the Japanese Magazine Publishers Assocation for manga magazines.

Recently, the Japanese Magazine Publishers Assocation posted circulation figures for manga anthology magazines, dating from around 2003. The numbers are split into several categories, including shounen publications like Shueisha's Shonen Jump and Kodansha's Shonen Magazine, and a seperate section for seinen magazines like Ultrajump and Young Jump. Figures for shoujo manga anthologies can be seen here and includes publications like Asuka, Margaret, and Ribon. Circulation numbers are also available for josei magazines and magazines for older women (all in Japanese). Each number in the right hand column represents 1/million of the actual figure.

Note that some of the shounen magazines highly outsell shoujo ones. For example, Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump (which is now running Naruto) has a circulation number of 3,240,000 while the popular Ribon magazine only has 990,000.

Viz's Shonen Jump USA is the highest circulating North American anime magazine, with circulation around 300 000.
