When asked by Box Office Mojo if 2D animation was dead, Robots co-producer Jerry Davis pointed to the upcoming American release of Steamboy as an example of what 2D animation can still offer. In another article in the New York Times, it is stated that Metropolis (both the Fritz Lang version and Tezuka's version) was among the influences on the design of Robot City.
