Anime Postage Stamps

posted on by Christopher Macdonald

For 2005 the Japanese ministry of posts and telecommunications will release an "Anime Hero and Heroine" series of stamps. This series will feature popular anime characters, with the 1st to the 3rd print run already having been designed. Scheduled for release on June 28th will be the Pokemon series. "Pikachu", "Lizardon", "Mew", "Rayquaza" and "Gonbe" will be featured on the first print run's 80yen and 50yen stamps. A sheet with two of each of the five stamps will be sold for 680 yen.

There will also be a 1000 yen package including a booklet and Pokémon post card, on sale July 22nd. Limited to a run of 500,000 units, the booklet will be available at post offices throughout Japan. Ironically, while Pokémon has already been featured on stamps outside of Japan in small countries in Africa and elsewhere, this is the first release of its kind in Japan.

The second series of stamps, due on August 1st, will focus on Gundam as its theme and the third series, due on February 1st, 2006, will feature characters from Galaxy Express 999.

Anime stamps are nothing new to Japan, however this is the first time that sheets of anime stamps have been available. Previously stamps featuring Gundam, Tetsuwan Atom, Uchuu Senkan Yamato, Doraemon, Rose of Versailles and many more had been released, but these were always released with other stamps, so those wanting to buy a sheet of stamps could not get a single sheet dedicated to anime.

There are also plans for more series of anime stamps and but which series will be featured is has yet to be announced.
