Movement-Based Gundam Game for 904i Debuts

Bandai develops Gundam game for new NTT Docomo cell phone

Japanese cell phone giant NTT Docomo launches their newest phone model, the FOMA 904i, later this week. For the launch of the phone, Bandai Networks Inc. has developed Narikiri Action! Kimi ga Gundam Da! (Real Time Action! You are Gundam!), a game which takes advantage of the phone's ability to run motion-sensing games.

The motion-sensing games on the 904i, which have already been compared to the motion-based gameplay of the Nintendo Wii, use the cell phone's camera and movement of the phone itself to affect gameplay. In the Gundam game, players navigate their "Gundam" based on commands given by characters from the Gundam anime. Players can also play as characters from the series in certain areas of the game.

In a market where ingenuity often leads to success, Docomo's decision to add "motion" based games is no surprise. The 904i also plays MP3s, takes pictures, sends e-mail, views websites, can be used for 2 cell phone numbers, and has a convertible LCD screen which can be used to watch video in "widescreen" format. Other tools added to Japanese cell phones in the past five years include portable "Karaoke machine" applications and GPS-based maps.
