posted on by Mikhail Koulikov
September 19-21 event to include Keiko Takemiya lecture, signing, screenings

From September 19 to September 21, the Canada-Japan Society of British Columbia, in cooperation with the University of British Columbia (UBC), will host a three-day celebration of the work of Keiko Takemiya, creator of the classic manga To Terra and Song of Wind and Trees. Takemiya, who is a professor at the department of cartoon and comic art at Kyoto Seika University, will attend the festival to deliver a lecture and sign copies of To Terra, which is released in English by Vertical Publishing. The signing will take place at the UBC Bookstore, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19.

The festival will also include a panel discussion on shōjo manga that features scholars Sharalyn Orbaugh and Masami Toko, as well as Yukari Fujimoto, an editor with the Japanese publishing company Chikuma Shobo. This will be held on Thursday, September 20, immediately following Takemiya's speech. Earlier the same day, UBC will hold an exhibition of her manga and screen some of the anime adapted from them. The final component of the program will be another lecture on the place manga holds in contemporary Japanese culture. This talk is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21.

Additional details about the festival, including addresses of all venues, are available on the Canada-Japan Society website.
