Nissan GT-R Coupe's Redesign Inspired by Gundam Anime

Carmaker's chief creative officer cites series for coupe's lines, vents

Nissan Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura told BusinessWeek magazine that the Nissan GT-R coupe's redesign, which was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show and Los Angeles Auto Show this month, was inspired by the Gundam anime series. "The GT-R is unique because it is not simply a copy of a European-designed supercar," said Nakamura. "It had to really reflect [Japanese] culture."

Specifically, Nakamura noted that the high-performance model's square lines and vents were influenced by Gundam. The Japanese designers created the aggressively boxy overall design, although the company's American designers softened the contours in its rear, and the European designers gave it an unusually raked roofline. The car is returning to production next year for the first time since 2002, in part due to Nissan's recent resurgence.
