The Sankei Sports newspaper has reported on Thursday that the voice actors Kouichi Yamadera (Cowboy Bebop's Spike, Donald Duck's Japanese voice) and Mika Kanai (Galaxy Angel's Vanilla) are divorced, and have been so since the spring of 2006. The two married in 1994, with Yamadera having famously proposed to her from on top of a postal mail box. According to acquaintances, the two had been discussing divorce for several years. Kanai is keeping their three-story house, while Yamadera is currently living in a apartment by himself in Tokyo. The two have no children.

The two were among the most prominent couples in the industry, particularly since they have been working together on the children's anime classic Soreike! Anpanman and other series. On Anpanman, Yamadera played Cheese and other roles, while Kanai played Melonpanna. On Ghost in the Shell: 2nd GIG, Yamadera played Togusa, while Kanai played Togusa's daughter. Yamadera is not only famous for dubbing Japanese anime and Disney films, but he also dubs Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey's film roles into Japanese.

Yamadera's agency said that the late notice of the divorce was not an attempt to conceal the matter, but the result of not being asked about it until now. The agency also said that Yamadera respects Kanai, and the divorce was mutual and amicable. Kanai's agency has requested privacy on the matter.
