Director of Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell to teach at Media Production Workshop

Mamoru Oshii, the world-renowned director of Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, and Avalon, will be taking a guest faculty post in the Department of Communication Studies at Tokyo Keizai University in April. Tokyo Keizai University happens to be located in the western Tokyo neighborhood of Kokubunji, which is where many anime studios such as Production I.G (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell) are located. The Department of Communication Studies was only just established at the university in 1995. Oshii will be working within the department's Media Production Workshop.

Gainax studio co-founder Toshio Okada famously lectured on "Otaku studies" at Tokyo University during the 1990s. Manga creator Keiko Takemiya (To Terra, Andromeda Stories), anime creator Yoshiyuki Tomino (Mobile Suit Gundam, Aura Battler Dunbine), and director Rintarō (Metropolis, X) are three of the professionals who teach or have lectured at Kyoto Seika University's pioneering Faculty of Manga. The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts plans to also have guest lecturers from the anime and manga fields when it opens the first anime major in a Japanese public university this April. (April is the beginning of the school year in Japan.)
