GeGeGe no Kitarō's Mizuki to Exhibit Art in Washington, D.C.

The Japan Information & Culture Center at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. will host an art exhibition by Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of the Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro supernatural manga, from March 5 to May 5. The exhibition recreates the paintings in the classic Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road Ukiyo-e series by Hiroshige Utagawa, only with cameos by Kitarō characters. The manga, which began in 1959 under the name Hakaba no Kitarō, has spawned seven television series, seven animated movies, and two live-action films. The stories center on an inhuman boy who straddles the line between the human and supernatural worlds. Two of the animated series, Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro and Hakaba Kitarō, are airing in Japan now. The second live-action film, which stars Eiji Wentz in the title role, will open in Japan on July 12.
The exhibition will open on Wednesday evening with video presentations from Mizuki and Takashi Murakami, a critically acclaimed modern artist who has been influenced by Mizuki's work. The opening will also feature Mizuki's younger brother and manager Yukio Mura, Yanoman Corporation CEO Seiichi Yano, and exhibition co-producer Mie Ikeda.
