Japanese Box Office: March 1–2

L change the WorLd, the live-action Death Note spinoff starring Kenichi Matsuyama (NANA, Sexy Voice and Robo, Detroit Metal City), fell to #2 at the Japanese box office (March 1–2) after three weekends at #1. It earned the equivalent of US$2,200,020 on 316 screens to add to its US$23,630,116 gross-to-date (Box Office Mojo). The drop came after the openings of #1's foreign film remake of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights/The Golden Compass novel, #3's One Piece: Episode of Chopper + Fuyu ni Saku, Kiseki no Sakura, and #4's Chō Gekijōban Keroro Gunsō 3: Keroro Tai Keroro - Tenkū Daikessen de Arimasu!.
The ninth film adaptation of the Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga and television anime series took in US$1,574,571 on 293 screens in its first weekend. The title, which roughly translates to One Piece: Episode of Chopper: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura, refers to the Winter Island or Drum Island story arc which introduces the Chōpper character. According to the producers, Oda directly participated in the movie's development.
The last manga-related movie on the top-10 list was the 3rd Keroro Gunsō or Sgt. Frog movie. Keroro Gunsō the Super Movie 3: Keroro vs. Keroro: There's a Great Duel in the Sky! has the title character facing Dark Keroro, a malevolent alter ego of himself. The film earned US$1,039,821 on 163 screens in its opening.
