Cooking Papa, Yasuko to Kenji Manga to Get TV Dramas (Updated)

posted on by Egan Loo
Seigi no Mikata, Dageki Tenshi Ruri to also be dramatized this July

Tochi Ueyama's Cooking Papa food manga, Aruko's Yasuko to Kenji (Yasuko and Kenij) shōjo romantic comedy, Chiaki Hijiri's Seigi no Mikata (Ally of Justice) shōjo comedy, and Yasuhito Yamamoto's Dageki Tenshi Ruri (Punching Angel Ruri) fighting manga will all be adapted into live-action television drama series this summer. According to the 27th issue of Kodansha's Morning magazine which went on sale on June 5, Tomomitsu Yamaguchi (Mind Game) will play Cooking Papa's title character of Kazumi Araiwa, a salaryman (male company worker) who happens to enjoy cooking more than his wife does. Yasuko Tomita (Last Quarter, My Neighbors the Yamadas) will play Araiwa's wife Nijiko in the drama which will premiere in Japan on August 29. The manga has been running in Morning magazine since 1986, and 97 volumes have been compiled so far. (The 1,000th magazine installment ran in January.) The manga has already been adapted into a 1992-1995 anime series by Eiken.

Tokio idol group's Masahiro Matsuoka will play the Kenji role in the July television adaptaton of the Yasuko to Kenji shōjo manga. Kenji is a former gang leader who lost his parents ten years ago (six years ago on Christmas Eve in the manga). Ever since, he became a shōjo manga artist and now watches over his high school sophomore sister, Yasuko. However, whenever he feels that he must protect Yasuko, he reverts to his old gangster personality and gets violent. It just so happens that Yasuko's new potential boyfriend, Jun, has a older sister named Erika who used to share Kenji's biker gang past. (The producers have yet to announce who will play Yasuko, Jun, and Erika.) The manga ran in Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret magazine from 2005 to 2006, although the manga will restart in the magazine in the August issue (on sale on July 11).

15-year-old Mirai Shida will star as the high school girl Yōko Nakada in the Seigi no Mikata drama adaptation which will premiere on July 9 in Japan. Yōko is always being bullied around by her "demonic sister," Makiko (Yu Yamada of Paradise Kiss). However, Makiko's deeds often end up helping the people around her, which earns her the ironic nickname "Seigi no Mikata" ("Ally of Justice"). The original manga has been running in Shueisha's Chorus manga magazine, and five volumes have so far been published.

The 27th issue (released on June 5) of Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine announced that Yasuhito Yamamoto's Dageki Tenshi Ruri will also get adapted into a television drama this summer. The drama will star on July 7 and continue to run on late Friday nights. Rei Kikukawa will play Ruri herself. Three volumes have been published in the 1999-2000 manga series.
