1/2-Scale Fighter Model Promotes Oshii's Sky Crawlers

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The model-making outfit Akiyama Kobo sculpted a 1/2-scale (45%) model of the fictional Sanka Mk B aerial fighter that stars in The Sky Crawlers, the latest adventure film from Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Avalon). The model made an appearance at the film's Japanese premiere on July 3 along with Oshii, Oscar-nominated lead actress Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Genius Party), lead actor Ryo Kase (Letters from Iwo Jima, Honey and Clover), supporting actor Shosuke Tanihara (Vexille, Lovely Complex), and supporting actress Chiaki Kuriyama (Battle Royale, Kill Bill). The film opens in Japan on August 2.
Akiyama also produced props for live-action films and promotions for Toei, Disney, and other companies. The otufit sculpted a "human-scale" (a model as tall as a person) Eva-01 unit from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The 3.825-meter-long (12.55-foot-long) Sanka model will be on display at the Shiodome NTV Tower in Tokyo until the end of the month. Miniatures of the fighter are also available with advance ticket sales and box sets of Hiroshi Mori's original novels.
