Requiem from the Darkness' Kyogoku, CLAMP on Mōryō no Hako Anime

CLAMP quartet to draw original designs for supernatural mystery novel adaptation

The August issue (on sale on July 10) of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine will announce that Natsuhiko Kyōgoku's Mōryō no Hako supernatural mystery novel will be animated with original character designs by the female quartet Clamp. The story follows a series of bizarre murders of schoolgirls who have been dismembered and stuffed into boxes. The private investigator hired by a missing daughter's mother joins forces with an antique book seller and others to unravel the murder spree. The novel is the second in Kyogoku's Kyogoku-dō series of supernatural mystery novels that center around the Kyogoku-dō antique book shop.

The author Kyogoku wrote the original novel inspiration for Requiem from the Darkness, while the Clamp female artist quartet drew the original character designs in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion in addition to their dozens of popular manga titles. NANA and Death Note episode director Ryosuke Nakamura will oversee the Mōryō no Hako anime, while Boogiepop Phantom and Steamboy scribe Sadayuki Murai will be supervising the scripts. Asako Nishida (Angel Links, Simoun, Vampire Knight) will adapt the Clamp designs before Madhouse's animators works on them.

The Mōryō no Hako novel won the 49th Mystery Writers of Japan Award, and director Masato Harada has already adapted the story into a live-action film in December of 2007. Aki Shimizu (Legend of "Zipangu" BLOOD SUCKER, Suikoden III) also draws a manga version that has been running in Kadokawa Shoten's Comic Kwai periodical since last year, and one volume (pictured at right) has been compiled and published so far.
