No Starch to Translate Non-Fiction Manga Guides (Updated)

No Starch Press, an American publisher of "geek entertainment" books, announced last week that it will be launching a series of non-fiction manga guides from the Japanese publisher Ohmsha this winter. Since 2003, Ohmsha has released two dozen books in its popular Manga de Wakaru (Understanding through Manga) series that teaches technical or educational topics with manga. No Starch will translate and release The Manga Guide to ... Statistics next month, followed by The Manga Guide to ... Databases in November and The Manga Guide to ... Calculus in January. No Starch plans to release eight books by the end of 2009, including books on physics, molecular biology, electricity, and relativity.
In Japan, Ohmsha has published manga guides on systems administration, differentials and integrals, Fourier analysis, cryptography, sequential control, and various job certification tests. Other manga-influenced educational guides include Harvey and Etsuko's Manga Guide to Japan book (Japanime), the Japanese the Manga Way book from Stone Bridge Press, Manga University's Kanji de Manga study guide, Tokyopop's vocabulary builders, and CliffsNotes and SelfMadeHero's guides to William Shakespeare's plays. However, most of these earlier releases were not Japanese manga that have been translated into English, but graphic novels created in English.
