Oshii's Musashi Film Tickets Sold with Sword Guards

Replicas of hero's real-life sword hilt guard offered as ticket bonuses

Not-So-Daily Link of 2008 V: Here is one of the stories that fell through the cracks in 2008.

1,000 advance tickets for Mamoru Oshii and Mizuho Nishikubo's Miyamoto Musashi: Sōken ni Haseru Yume (Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai) film were offered at last month's Comic Market 75 event with replicas of the actual sword hilt guard (tsuba) used by the title character. Oshii developed and wrote this story about Musashi, the real-life swordsmen who pioneered the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū style of two-sword fighting and wrote The Book of Five Rings classic on military strategy. Nishikubo is directing the anime film for a planned opening in Japan in early summer.

Etched on the sword guard replicas are designs of waves and the moon, which are key images in the Musashi's The Book of Five Rings. While the replicas are described as "paperweights," the official website notes that they can be used as key-holders or worn as accessories.
