U.S. Mysterious Cities of Gold DVDs, Rintaro's Yona Yona Penguin Dated

posted on by Egan Loo

The DVD distributor Arts Alliance America and the production company Fabulous Films announced on Tuesday that The Mysterious Cities of Gold French/Japanese animated series classic will ship in the United States for the first time on DVD on April 7. The original story followed a Spanish boy, an Incan girl, and a boy from the Galapagos Islands as they searched for the fabled Cities of Gold in South America. The DVD set release will contain the entire 1982-1983 adventure series. The United Kingdom already received its series DVDs last year, while the TF-1 television channel in France is reportedly planning three new animated seasons in 2011.

The Japanese film distributor Shochiku is listing a December opening date for Yona Yona Penguin, the latest anime film from acclaimed director Rintarō (Metropolis, X movie). The film was previously pushed from 2008 to 2009. Unlike almost all of Rintarō's previous works, Yona Yona Penguin was animated with 3D computer graphics. The Screen Daily periodical reported in 2006 that the story is about "a little girl who gets sucked into a fantasy world populated by goblins who believe that their saviour will be a penguin."
