Japanese Box Office, March 7-8

Takashi Miike's live-action adaptation of the Yatterman science-fiction comedy anime became the director's latest #1 movie on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the March 7-8 weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, it opened on 312 screens at the beginning of Japan's spring break to make the equivalent of US$4,626,729.
Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Uchū Kaitakushi (Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's How Space Was Won, New Edition), the second anime film remake of a classic 1980-1981 Doraemon manga story that sends the title robot cat to space, also debuted at #2. It took in US$3,766,592 on 364 screens.
Chō Gekijōban Keroro Gunsō Gekishin Dragon Warriors de Arimasu! (Sgt. Frog the Super Movie: There Are Invading Dragon Warriors!), the fourth anime movie based on Mine Yoshizaki's Keroro Gunsō (Sgt. Frog) science fiction comedy manga and anime, opened at #5. It earned US$992,159 on 168 screens.
The second film in Yukihiko Tsutsumi's three-part adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga fell again from #3 to #9. 20th Century Boys Part II: Saigo no Kibō earned US$721,531 on 311 screens in its sixth weekend for a gross-to-date of US$28,052,788.
Yojiro Takita's live-action Departures (Okuribito) film fell to #3 after resurging to #1 the previous weekend. It won the Oscar in the Foreign Language Film category on February 22. 26 weeks after its opening, it added US$2,433,652 to its gross-to-date of US$47,583,239 on 196 screens.
