1st film from Animatrix's Takeshi Koike in world's largest animation festival

France's Annecy, the world's largest animation film festival, has announced on Wednesday that Takeshi Koike and Madhouse's Redline anime will compete in the Feature Film category of the June 8-13 event. The 90-minute film follows the intertwined journeys of competitors in the deadliest car-racing game in the world. Koike is best known for directing the "World Record" short in The Animatrix anthology. He also directed the Trava video and served as a key animator on Dead Leaves, Samurai Champloo, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Out of 45 films that were submitted for consideration, Annecy announced only 10 films for its Official Selection in the Feature Film category:

In some of the previous years' competitions, there have been more than one Japanese feature film nominated, but Redline is Japan's sole representative this year. Mamoru Hosoda won Mention spéciale (Special Distinction) for Feature Film in 2007 with Madhouse's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Isao Takahata's Pom Poko had previously won the category's top award, Le Cristal du long métrage (The Crystal for Best Feature Film). Studio 4°C's Genius Party Beyond anthology, Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (Mamoru Oshii's special edition of his first Ghost in the Shell film), and Masahiro Ando's Sword of the Stranger will also play at the festival this year, but outside the competition.

The Annecy festival had already announced last month that Takena Nagao's clay-animated "Chainsaw Maid" will compete in the short films category, while Takuya Igarashi and BONES' Soul Eater and Toei Animation's Uchi no 3 Shimai will compete in the TV Series category. Two student projects, Minako Matsuda's "Himawarisou" ("A Sunflower") and Masaki Okuda, Ryō Ōkawara, and Yutaro Ogawa's "Orchestra," are competing in the graduation films category.
