Sunrise Animates Tokyo Panic Cruise Ride Attraction

posted on by Egan Loo

The Sunrise anime studio produced the footage in Tokyo Panic Cruise, one of three new attractions which opened on April 25 at the Tokyo Dome City entertainment complex's Geopolis amusement park. The eight-passenger ride uses 3D imagery, sound effects, wind machines, and other special effects to depict a four-minute night journey through a futuristic city. Takashi Imanishi directed Aoki Ryūsei SPT Layzner, Armored Trooper Votoms: The Heretic Saint, and the computer-animated Gundam Evolve and Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO projects before working on Tokyo Panic Cruise. Imanishi co-directed the new footage with Shinji Aramaki, the Genesis Climber Mospeada mechanical designer who has since branched into directing computer-animated works such as the Appleseed film, the Appleseed: Ex Machina sequel, and the Viper's Creed television series.

The other two new attractions are Magiquest and the previously announced Lupin Sansei ~ Meikyū no Wana (Lupin III: Labyrinth Trap) walkthrough attraction. The Lupin III attraction lends personal digital assistants (PDAs) to visitors for an interactive treasure hunt inside the hideout of the title thief character from Monkey Punch's manga and anime.

Sunrise also produced the animation used in two Gundam attractions at the Fuji-Q Highland theme park at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Gundam the Ride put visitors on a shuttle simulator during the climactic Battle of A Baoa Qu. In 2007, the park replaced the ride with Gundam Crisis, a walkthrough attraction similar to the Lupin III one. Gundam Crisis visitors act as engineers racing to bring a life-size, 18-meter-tall (about 59-feet-tall) Gundam model online for a battle. Kenichi Suzuki (Gundam Evolve 8, 14) directed the animation seen in Gundam Crisis.
