Mamoru Oshii Says He Wants to Make New Film in Poland

Award-winning director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Urusei Yatsura) revealed this week that he is aiming to direct at least one of his next films in Poland. Oshii discussed his upcoming work during a dual interview with South Korean actress Jeon Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun), the star of Chris Nahon's live-action film adaptation of the Blood: The Last Vampire anime film that Oshii created. Oshii half-jokingly said that he wants to have Jeon star in a film that he is directing. He added that he wants to shoot the film in Europe, and he indicated that the film will be produced in Poland.
Oshii had previously revealed during the promotion of The Sky Crawlers film's Japanese DVD release in March that he is planning to make two live-action feature films — one of which will be released as soon as this fall. At the time, he said that one of the projects will be aimed at film connoisseurs and will have a penny-pinching budget, while the other live-action film project will be an action-adventure epic of "eroticism and violence." He is also planning an anime film for tentative release in the 2011 timeframe. Oshii had directed a previous work in Poland: the live-action film Avalon.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group acquired all North American rights to the live-action Blood: The Last Vampire film, and Samuel Goldwyn Films will release the film in American theaters on July 10. The film is opening in Japan on Friday (under the title Last Blood), in the United Kingdom on June 12, and then in France on June 17. It will also open in Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and other countries in June.
