4°C's First Squad Wins Award at Moscow Int'l Fim Fest

Kommersant honors Misha Sprits, Aljosha Klimov, Tweeny Witches helmer Ashino's film

The Moscow International Film Festival announced on Sunday that Yoshiharu Ashino and Studio 4°C's First Squad - The Moment Of Truth anime film won the Kommersant newspaper's prize at the event. The biannual festival is Russia's most renowned international film festival. The latest promotional video and trailer for the joint Japanese-Russian-Canadian production can be viewed on the official website.

The 73-minute film is set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Several Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities have been drafted into a special unit to fight the invading German army. Opposing them is a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer, who is attempting to raise an army of 12th-Century crusaders from the dead and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

Russian artists Misha Sprits and Aljosha Klimov created First Squad, and Yoshiharu Ashino (Tweeny Witches) is directing the project in Japan at Studio 4°C. Hirofumi Nakata designed the characters after working on last year's Batman: Gotham Knight anthology video. Studio 4°C head Eiko Tanaka (The Animatrix, Tekkonkinkreet) is producing the project with Sprits and Klimov. The film features the music of DJ Krush. The Japanese release plans have not been announced yet.
