Saru Lock film to open in Japan on February 27; Funimation plans Soul Eater for 2010

A 31-second preview for the live-action Saru Lock the Movie has been posted on the film's official website via Yahoo! Japan's streaming service. The preview first debuted at the end of the final episode of the Saru Lock television series on October 15; both projects are based on Naoki Serizawa's Saru Lock action comedy manga. Hayato Ichihara (Rookies, Onmyoji II, Wild Life) plays Yatarō "Saru" Sarumaru, an ordinary high school boy who daydreams about idols but otherwise has no luck with girls. However, this silver-haired son of a locksmith also happens to be a lock-picking genius, and there is no lock that "Saru" (literally, "monkey") cannot open.

The original manga has been running in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since 2004, and 21 compiled book volumes have been published. The film will open in Japan on February 27. The television drama's main cast of Sōsuke Takaoka (Rookies, Battle Royale, Crows Zero) as Saru's childhood friend and police officer Yamada, Sei Ashina, Gota Watabe, and others are reprising their roles in the film. Joining the cast for the film are Manami Higa as a deceitful woman who hires Saru, Manami Konishi as a high-ranking police officer and Tokyo University graduate, Ken Mitsuishi as a gang leader, and Masahiko Nishimura and Jun Kunimura as members of the National Police Agency.

Funimation posted a new 201-second English-dubbed video clip for the Soul Eater anime series on the YouTube website on Monday. The previous English-dubbed videos are still available. Funimation is now planning to release this adaptation of Atsushi Ohkubo's manga in 2010. Yen Press is publishing the first volume of the manga this month.
