Newspaper: Tatsumi's A Drifting Life Memoir Gets Film

The Business Times, a financial newspaper based in Singapore, reported on Friday that two local companies are co-producing a US$2-million film adaptation of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's memoir A Drifting Life. According to the report, Infinite Frameworks and Zhao Wei Films are producing the film in black-and-white and in Japanese. Such a film project has yet to be announced in Japan.
Tatsumi pioneered the avant-garde gekiga style of storytelling that diverged from mainstream manga. In the 840 pages of A Drifting Life, Tatsumi gives a semi-autobiographical account of an author's struggle to make a post-war living in manga-drawing — all while trying to challenge the medium's boundaries and establish a new artform.
The Business Times also reported on the previously announced 3D computer-animated feature film called Titan Rain. This project is a collaboration between the anime studio Production I.G, the Singaporean production company Storm Lion Pictures, Le Chevalier D'Eon writer Tow Ubukata, Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode director Atsushi Takeuchi, Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary, and Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki.
Drawn and Quarterly, the North American publisher of A Drifting Life, could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
