Crunchyroll Adds Phantom Thief Reinya Anime

posted on by Egan Loo
Morning Musume's Reina Tanaka stars as title character in TV comedy shorts

The Crunchyroll media-distribution website has announced that it is launching its streaming of the Phantom Thief Reinya (Kaitō Reinya) television anime series on Friday. This series of 12 anime shorts from the KDDI telecommunications company, the Kadokawa Group, and the Upfront Group adapts the four-panel "nonsensical comedy" manga of the same name. The anime premiered in Japan on January 9, and Crunchyroll is adding a new episode every Friday at 8:50 a.m. PST worldwide (except in Japan).

Reina Tanaka, a member of Hello Project's girl band Morning Musume who played Onegai My Melody Kirara's title character, serves as the inspiration for the main character Reinya, a thief that is the stuff of urban legends. Reinya works at the Faminya convenience store near a police station by day. By night, she is a whimsical thief chased by bumbling police officers, led by the handsome Keiji-san ("Detective," Kousuke Okano) and the cool Keibu-san ("Captain," Sō Yōki). Joining Reinya on her escapades is her trusty assistant, the mouse Chūtarō (Okano).

Takahiro Yoshimatsu was the character designer and animation director of Slayers and Trigun before becoming the chief director and storyboarder of Kaitō Reinya. Technical director Hideaki Iwami and the animator "Mr. A" are working at the Stringray animation studio with Upfront Style, the entertainment agency that conceived of the story. Kenichi Kanemaki (Negima!?, Hell Girl franchise) is supervising the series scripts, and Fullmetal Alchemist and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 director Seiji Mizushima is serving as the sound director.
