Japanese Box Office, February 13-14: Haruhi Adds $567K

Haruhi Suzumiya stays on Rentrak's chart at #8, falls off Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film, the first ever film in the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, fell to #8 in its second weekend on Variety and Rentrak Theatrical's chart after debuting at #6 during the February 6-7 weekend. The film had opened at #7 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's box office chart of the top 10 films, but did not place on the chart in its second weekend.

According to Rentrak Theatrical, Kyoto Animation's Haruhi Suzumiya film earned US$566,802 in 24 theaters for a per-screen average of US$23,617, and a nine-day total of US$2,749,895. By contrast, Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime, the first Macross Frontier film, earned US$2,627,707 in nine days on 30 screens. In the Haruhi Suzumiya film, chief director Tatsuya Ishihara and director Yasuhiro Takemoto adapted the franchise's fourth light novel from Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-onger Ginmaku Bang!, a live-action film featuring a crossover between Samurai Sentai Shinkenger and Engine Sentai Go-onger, fell from #6 (#7 on Rentrak Theatrical's chart) to #8 during its third weekend in the box office. The film did not place in the top 10 on Rentrak Theatrical's chart.

James Cameron's Avatar science-fiction action movie, which stayed at #1 for the eighth straight weekend, earned a weekend box office take of US$5,623,472 on 639 screens. That gives the film a per-screen average of US$8,800 and a total-to-date of US$121,621,223.
