Studio 4°C's New 3D Anime Efforts Profiled

Kōji Morimoto (Animatrix, Memories) discusss new Ambient Love work

The Japanese film website white-screen.jp posted an article about the 3D anime efforts of Studio 4°C and director Koji Morimoto (The Animatrix, Genius Party, Memories) earlier this month. During last month's Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF), the studio demoed its Sachiko trailer and its new Ambient Love project in stereoscopic 3D.

Ambient Love is the latest Studio 4°C project that Morimoto is personally directing. The love story uses minimalistic images and sound to depict a rendezvous between a man and a woman. Studio 4°C previewed a one-minute version of the project at TAF.

Morimoto and his Ambient Love CGI director Shunsuke Watanabe (Halo Legends) noted the different requirements of 3D production compared to traditional 2D production, such as editing with longer cuts and filling the camera's "deeper" field of view without overwhelming the viewers. Watanabe runs Autodesk MAYA 2009 software on a Third Wave workstation equipped with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 graphics card, which outputs stereoscopic 3D via an Acer GD245HQ monitor and active-shutter glasses.

Morimoto noted that he has been influenced by fellow director Katsuhiro Otomo, French comic creator Moebius, and the photography work of Issei Suda and Matt Mahurin. He became an animator because of Space Battleship Yamato, and his favorite movie is Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker.
