Hammer Session! Con Artist Manga Gets Live-Action Show

posted on by Egan Loo
Absolute Boyfriend's Hayami stars as fugitive-turned-teacher with Arrietty's Shida

A live-action television series adaptation of Yamato Koganemaru and Namoshiro Tanahashi's Hammer Session! con artist manga will premiere on Japan's TBS network this July. The manga follows a genius con artist named Yū who escapes from a prison transport vehicle during an accident. Yū goes into hiding and assumes the fake identity of Gorō Hachisuka, a junior high school instructor who specializes in a shocking form of teaching known as a "hammer session." The television version will change the junior high school setting into a high school one.

25-year-old actor Mokomichi Hayami will play the con-artist-turned-teacher after his starring roles in the live-action television adaptations of Gokusen and Absolute Boyfriend. 17-year-old actress Mirai Shida and 16-year-old actor Jingi Irie will be playing two of the students. Shida starred in the television version of the Seigi no Mikata shōjo manga, and she will be playing the title role in Studio Ghibli's Karigurashi no Arrietty film this July. Irie will play another high school student role this July in Watashi no Yasashikunai Sempai, first live-action film from Kyōran Kazoku Nikki author Akira and director Yutaka Yamamoto (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Kannagi).

Hammer Session! ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 2006 to 2009, and 11 book volumes have been compiled.
