Eva:2.22 BD's 1st Week Tops This Is It's Sales to Date

The Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) film has topped Oricon's weekly sales ranking charts in both the DVD and Blu-ray Disc categories in Japan during the May 24-30 week. In one week, Evangelion: 2.22's 357,000 Blu-ray sales have already topped all the Blu-ray copies of Michael Jackson's This Is It that have been sold in Japan so far (351,000 copies). Evangelion: 2.22's is also now the top-selling Blu-ray in Japan since Oricon began keeping records in this category in July of 2008. (James Cameron's Avatar film sold 198,000 copies on Blu-ray in Japan since April.)
Evangelion: 2.22 also sold 283,029 DVDs as the top DVD of the May 24-30 week. It topped Ponyo's 200,000-copy record for first-week sales for an anime DVD release. All told, Evangelion: 2.22 earned 2.21 billion yen (about US$24 million) on Blu-ray and 1.72 billion yen (US$19 million) on DVD for a grand total of 3.93 billion yen (US$43 million) in its first week of sales.
