The Twitter account of manga creator Junko Mizuno has confirmed on Wednesday that she will sign autographs on September 18 at the Giant Robot store in San Francisco. Mizuno is responsible for the story and art for manga such as Hansel and Gretel, Princess Mermaid, and Pure Trance. Giant Robot started as a Los Angeles-based magazine in 1994 focusing on Asian and Asian American culture. The magazine has since expanded with several stores located in the United States, including the one in San Francisco.

Viz Cinema, the San Francisco theater dedicated to Japanese related films, announced its September showing lineup. The live-action films Death Note and Death Note II: The Last Name are scheduled to be shown on Saturday to celebrate the release of the Blu-ray Death Note Collection. A special September 11 screening of Satoshi Kon's Paprika is scheduled as a remembrance for the director. Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second, a feature about two friends steadily losing their close friendship, will also run on September 14. The live-action Detroit Metal City, a story about a musician with two clashing egos, will make its San Francisco premiere on September 18.

San Francisco's Japantown Peace Plaza will then hold an outdoor screening of Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle on September 19. The free event will show the movie in Japanese with English subtitles. The story follows Sophie, a young girl who has a hideous spell cast on her by the Witch of Waste because of Sophie's friendship with Howl, a wizard whose large home can travel by its own power.
