Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii's Seraphim Manga Partly Reprinted (Updated)

The November issue of Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Ryū magazine announced on Saturday that the next issue will ship on October 19 with a "Satoshi Kon Memorial Book" containing several chapters of Seraphim: 2-Oku 6661-Man 3336 no Tsubasa (Seraphim: 266,613,336 Wings). The late Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paprika) and fellow award-winning anime director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Avalon, The Sky Crawlers) created this manga.
The story is set after the world has been ravaged by "tenshi-byō" (angel disease), an affliction that eventually leads to death for all the victims. To solve the mystery of this disease, three wise men and a girl named Sera embark on a journey to the heart of Central Asia. Many enemies and conspiracies await them along the way.
The manga originally ran for 16 chapters in Tokuma's Animage magazine from the May 1995 issue to the November 1996 issue, but it was never reprinted in book form. According to Kon, Oshii asked him to make this manga based on Oshii's original story concept; Kon had contributed to the layouts for Oshii's Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993).
Kon earned acclaim for such anime works as Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paranoia Agent (2004), and Paprika (2006), but he began as a manga creator on Kaikisen (1990) and other titles. Kon passed away on August 24 while he was working on his fifth feature film, Yume-Miru Kikai.
