Inherit the Stars Gets Manga by 2001 Nights' Hoshino (Update 2)

posted on by Egan Loo

This year's fourth issue of Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine announced on Thursday that Yukinobu Hoshino (2001 Nights, To) will launch a manga adaptation of James P. Hogan's science-fiction classic Inherit the Stars in the next issue on February 25. The original novel is set in the middle of the 21st century when lunar base builders discover a human corpse in a crimson spacesuit. Mankind's understanding of its origins and its place in the universe is irrevocably transformed, when scientists realize that the corpse has lain on the moon for 50,000 years.

Hogan was born in London on June 27, 1941, and he made his literary debut with Inherit the Stars in 1977. Tokyo Sogensha translated and published the book in 1980 in Japan, where it became a popular hit among science-fiction readers. His many fans include the members of Studio Nue, who eventually created The Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

Besides influencing the themes in several anime, the "Inherit the Stars" name itself (in English and in Japanese as Hoshi o Tsugumono) and characters were directly referenced in such anime and manga as Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Genesis Climber Mospeada, Geneshaft, and Negima! Magister Negi Magi. Hoshino already adapted James P. Hogan's The Two Faces of Tomorrow novel into a manga in 1993.

Hogan passed away last July at the age of 69.
