posted on by Gia Manry
Japan's Presspop issues hardcover book of "1st robot" in manga, predating Astro Boy

The Japanese publisher Presspop announced last December that it will publish an English-translated volume of Gajō Sakamoto's 1934-1936 Tank Tankuro manga this spring. The manga features the adventures of the robot Tank Tankurō and the villain he fights, Kuro Kabuto ("Black Helmet"), in the decade before World War II.

According to Presspop in a promotional image for the Tank Tankuro: Prewar Works volume, the character "is said to be one of the first robot [sic]" and "the first Japanese science fiction" in Japanese manga; it was also an influence on Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy), Fujiko F. Fujio (Doraemon), and other manga creators.

The 256-page hardcover volume will have a suggested retail price (SRP) of US$29.99 and will include a slipcase. Presspop has not announced a specific release date at this time.
