Franchise sells over 500,000; Oreimo tops bunko rankings for 2nd straight volume

The first volume of the Puella Magi Oriko Magica side story manga sold 62,869 copies to debut at #4 on Oricon's comic sales chart for the May 9-15 week, and the first volume of the Puella Magi Kazumi Magica - The Innocent Malice manga also sold 59,728 copies to land right below at #5. Not only did these two volumes outperform the first two volumes of the main Puella Magi Madoka Magica magical girl manga in first-week sales, they are the first books in the franchise to debut in the weekly top 5. The franchise has now sold over 500,000 copies.

The first volume of the main manga series debuted in February (one month after the television anime series itself premiered) and only sold 14,000 copies in its first week. However, four weeks later as the anime grew in popularity, the same volume sold 45,000 copies in a week. The second volume of the main series debuted in March with 31,050 copies sold in its first week — and then sold 49,166 copies in its second week. All told, the first volume has sold about 220,000 copies and the second volume has sold about 200,000.

The eighth volume of the Ore no Imōto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (Oreimo) light novel series sold 151,194 copies to top the bunko sales ranking chart for the May 9-15 week. It is the second volume in the series to rank #1, after the seventh volume debuted at the same spot last November.

The AKB48 Sōsenkyō Kōshiki Guidebook for the all-female idol group AKB48 moves 75,000 copies in its first week to land on top of the general book category.
