Manga UK Adds Welcome to the Space Show with English Dub

Dub of science-fiction family film produced in U.S., released in U.K.

The British anime distributor Manga Entertainment revealed on Friday that it will be releasing an English-language dub of the 2010 anime feature film Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW. The dub will be produced in the United States. Manga Entertainment will release the film on DVD and Blu-Ray in the United Kingdom before the end of the year.

The science-fiction family film begins during the summer vacation of fifth grader Natsuki Ōyama, who just moved into the countryside. She and four of her schoolmates embark on an space-spanning adventure that takes them beyond the fields they call home.

Manga Entertainment UK confirmed with ANN that the dub is the first to be co-produced by the company since Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress, which was dubbed in 2005. (The previous American release was subtitle-only.) Unlike the Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW dub, the Millennium Actress dub was produced in England. Meanwhile, Optimum's British-produced dub of Studio Ghibli's Arrietty will be released on July 29, but that dub is different from the one being prepared in America for the same film.

For Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW, Koji Masunari, Masashi Ishihama, and writer Hideyuki Kurata joined forces at A-1 Pictures Inc. after working together on the R.O.D. Read or Die and Kamichu! anime. Susan Boyle, the Scottish woman who became globally famous after performing on the televised competition Britain's Got Talent, contributed her "Who I Was Born to Be" song as the theme of the film.

Aniplex is streaming the first 22 minutes of the film online with English subtitles:
