Onigamiden Director's Cut BD Adds 19 Minutes in Japan

posted on by Egan Loo
Legend of the Millennium Dragon historical adventure anime ships in Japan in September

On September 28, Sony Pictures Entertainment will release a Japanese Blu-ray Disc of Hirotsugu Kawasaki and Studio Pierrot's anime film Onigamiden with a director's cut that add 19 minutes of footage.

The anime adapts a 2004 two-volume novel by the same name from author Takafumi Takada. The historical adventure revolves around a 15-year-old boy who travels back in time — over 1,200 years ago to the Heian period — and faces a war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto.

The original theatrical release ran 98 minutes long, and the Blu-ray will include that version. However, the Blu-ray will add a 117-minute Director's Cut version. (The DVD version will only have the theatrical version.) The Blu-ray will also have an exclusive conceptual art gallery.

Tetsuya Nishio (Naruto, Jin-Roh, The Sky Crawlers) designed the characters in the film, and Katsuhiro Ōtomo (Akira, Steamboy) is credited with the conceptual designs of the Orochi creature.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will release the same film under the title Legend of the Millennium Dragon in North America on October 4, but the company has not indicated which version it will release in this region. The North American Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack will include a conceptual art gallery. Anime Expo held the film's American premiere on July 1.
