Hakuōki Sekkaroku Anime Gets New Manga

Kana Shinohara draws historical manga in Monthly Sylph magazine

A new manga adaptation of the Hakuōki game and anime franchise launched in the October issue of ASCII Media Works' Monthly Sylph magazine on Monday. The manga is based on the ongoing Hakuōki Sekkaroku original video anime project, which in turn is based on Idea Factory's romance adventure game for female players. The first volume in the five-volume anime went on sale on August 5.

Kana Shinohara (Ichi) draws the new manga. The franchise recounts the exploits of the Japanese shogunate's legendary Shinsengumi warriors, from the perspective of a young woman who aids their mission. The manga's first chapter centers around Hakuōki's reimagining of the real-life Shinsengumi member Okita Sōji.

The same October issue of Monthly Sylph also ran the final chapter in Naki Hiraku's earlier Hakuōki manga. The fourth and final compiled book volume for Hiraku's manga version will ship on October 22. The October issue of Monthly Sylph comes with a booklet with images of scenes from the Hakuōki Sekkaroku anime and interviews with the cast.

The first anime series based on Idea Factory's Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan game aired last spring, and the second television series, Hakuōki Hekketsu-roku, premiered last October. Aksys Games announced at Anime Expo this year that it will release the first Hakuōki game in North America.
