Bandai Namco Breaks Down Revenues by Franchise

Gundam projected to earn 42.8 billion yen this year, followed by Kamen Rider, One Piece

On Wednesday, Bandai Namco Holdings posted a financial breakdown of its franchises from fiscal year 2009 through fiscal year 2012 (which will end in March 2012).

Bandai Namco Revenue by Franchise

The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has remained Bandai Namco's largest franchise, bringing in 42.8 billion yen (about US$548.4 million) in fiscal year 2009, 34.6 billion yen (US$443.3 million) in fiscal year 2010, 38.2 billion yen (US$489.5 million) in fiscal year 2011, and an estimated 43.5 billion yen (US$557.4 million) in fiscal year 2012. The franchise brought in 20.5 billion yen (US$262.7 million) in the first half (April-September 2011) of fiscal year 2012.

Kamen Rider is Bandai Namco's next largest franchise in fiscal year 2012, contributing 14.9 billion yen (US$190.9 million) in revenue for the first half of fiscal year 2012. Bandai Namco estimated the franchise will bring in 25.5 billion yen (US$326.8 million) in revenue by March (which is down from the 26.4 billion yen or US$338.3 million the franchise brought in fiscal year 2011).

The One Piece franchise raised 11.8 billion yen (US$151.2 million) for Namco Bandai in the first half of fiscal year 2012, and it is estimated to bring in 21 billion yen (US$269.1 million) by March, which is up from the 15.4 billion yen (US$197.3 million) the franchise brought in in fiscal year 2011. The franchise had brought in 4.3 billion yen (US$55.1 million) in fiscal year 2010 and 4.6 billion yen (US$58.9 million) in fiscal year 2009.

Bandai Namco estimated that the Power Rangers (Super Sentai) franchise will bring in 19.5 billion yen (US$249.9 million) in fiscal year 2012, that the Pretty Cure franchise will bring in an estimated 11 billion yen (US$141.0 million), and that Ben10 will bring in an estimated 9.5 billion yen (US$121.7 million). In the first half of fiscal year 2012 Power Rangers brought the company 9.5 billion yen (US$121.7 million), Pretty Cure brought in 5.6 billion yen (US$71.8 million), and Ben10 brought in 2.9 billion yen (US$37.1 million).

Bandai Namco Toy/Hobby Revenue by Franchise

Bandai Namco also broke down its revenue from just toys and models by franchise. Bandai Namco estimated that Kamen Rider will earn 22 billion yen (US$281.9 million) in fiscal year 2012, that Mobile Suit Gundam will earn 16 billion yen (US$204.9 million), that Super Sentai will earn 12 billion yen (US$153.7 million), that Pretty Cure will earn 10 billion yen (US$128.1 million), and Anpanman will earn in billion yen (US$115.3 million) in fiscal year 2012.

In fiscal year 2011, Kamen Rider brought in 23 billion yen (US$294.5 million) in toy revenue, Mobile Suit Gundam brought in 13.4 billion yen (US$171.6 million), Super Sentai brought in 9.2 billion yen (US$117.8 million), Pretty Cure brought in 12.5 billion yen (US$160.1 million), and Anpanman brought in 8.6 billion yen (US$110.1 million).

Bandai Namco also estimates the following franchises will bring in the following toy revenue in fiscal year 2012:

  • One Piece - 9.0 billion yen (US$115.3 million)
  • Battle Spirits - 4.2 billion yen (US$53.7 million)
  • Tamagotchi! - 3.5 billion yen (US$44.8 million)
  • Dragon Ball - 3.0 billion yen (US$38.4 million)
  • Danbōru Senki - 3.0 billion yen (US$38.4 million)
  • Toriko - 2.0 billion yen (US$25.6 million)
  • Ultraman - 1.5 billion yen (US$19.2 million)

Previous Predictions for Gundam Franchise

Bandai Namco had predicted in 2007 that the Gundam franchise would bring in 60 billion yen (US$767.6 million - at the time US$500 million) in sales in fiscal year 2008. Bandai Namco then lowered its expectations for that fiscal year down to 48 billion yen (US$614.1 million - US$450 million at the time). Gundam actually brought in 50.9 billion yen (US$651.2 million - US$495 million at the time) in that fiscal year.
