Dashi Master Manga Put on Hold After Alleged Photo-Tracing

Naotsugu Matsueda's illustrations "extremely resembled" online food, ingredient images

Shueisha's Grand Jump magazine editorial staff announced on Wednesday that future publication of Naotsugu Matsueda's Dashi Master manga have been put on hold due to similarities between the artists' illustrations and photographs uploaded online. The manga appears in the second volume of Grand Jump, released on December 7, but Matsueda's story will not appear in the magazine in its December 21 issue.

Grand Jump's editorial staff noted that scenery, ingredients, dishes, and other illustrations in the manga "extremely resembled" the web photographs. Japanese bloggers have suggested that Matsueda traced numerous images of food, ingredients, and background images from various Japanese websites for illustrations that appear throughout the manga's six compiled books.

The Dashi Master culinary manga first serialized in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine in 2010. Matsueda's story moved to Grand Jump when Shueisha discontinued the Business Jump and Super Jump magazines in November. The publisher released the manga's sixth compiled book in Japan on September 16.

This is not the first alleged case of graphic novel artists photo-tracing copyrighted images. Nick Simmons, the artist of the Incarnate comic book series, addressed allegations that he copied illustrations from Tite Kubo's Bleach manga last year. Youka Nitta acknowledged tracing a photograph from Italy's Diesel fashion brand for her Stand on Vessel (Haru wo Daiteita series #49) manga in 2008.
