Former Madhouse Head: Poppy Hill May Not Have Recouped Costs

posted on by Ko Ransom

In an April 18 installment in an article series examining the business of Studio Ghibli films, former Madhouse Representative Director Hiromichi Masuda states that while the production budget for Ghibli's films are not made public, there is a possibility that its 2011 film From Up On Poppy Hill may not have recouped its production costs.

Masuda then goes on to state that because animation companies focused on theatrical productions rely heavily on box-office receipts, the effects that a failure to recoup costs on one title has on the company is much larger than on an animation studio that focuses on producing animation for television.
