Bunkasai festival at Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal.

The Brewery Arts Centre (map), based in Kendal (Cumbria) in the Lake District, has announced a week-long "Bunkasai" festival of Japan-themed events running from Sunday July 8 to Sunday July 15. It will feature a manga exhibition, anime screenings (including Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos), a manga artist creating a new graphic novel inspired by the Lake District, and manga workshops. (See below for a full list of screenings and workshops.)

The festival includes an exhibition of the work of manga artist Takao Saitō, creator of the character Golgo 13. According to the website, "The Brewery exhibition will feature original drawings and giclee prints of Saito's work, along with merchandise and commemorative items inspired by and linked to Saito's influential career." The exhibition will run on beyond the festival to September 3, and admission is free.

There will also be a keynote presentation by Mikio Sabata, the head of Saito's publishing company Leed. According to the website, "Shibata will explore current trends in Japanese Manga, developments in digital publishing and the links between Japanese Manga and other media, including gaming and film." The presentation will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday July 12. Tickets are £8, including admission to one of the three films being shown that evening (see below).

Manga artist Kayo Nakamura will also be attending the event. According to the website, "Nakamura is working with the Brewery to create a brand new graphic novel inspired by the Lake District. During her residency, Kayo will explore the famous and not so well-known parts of Cumbria seeking inspiration for her novel. The novel will be published via the Brewery website (www.breweryarts.co.uk) in September 2012. During her residency explore Nakamura's work in an exhibition showing work created in Japan and some of the material inspired by the Lake District."
