Discotek Licenses GTO TV Anime

Complete series in 2013; Lupin III: Mystery of Mamo, Mad Bull 34 slated for February

The North American video distributor Discotek Media announced on Wednesday that it licensed the GTO anime series. It will release the complete series next year.

The story follows ex-biker and gang leader Eikichi Onizuka who has one goal, to become the greatest teacher. After obtaining a job at a prestigious private school, he's left to handle the 'problem class' after the last few teachers quit.

Great Teacher Onizuka aired in Japan in 1999. Tokyopop licensed the anime series in 2001, releasing it on DVD singles and two boxsets before closing their doors last year. The series also inspired a live-action GTO drama series, special and movie starring Takashi Sorimachi in 1999. A reboot starring EXILE band member Akira premiered in July.

The anime adaptation is inspired by Tohru Fujisawa's manga series of the same name. The original manga ended in 2002, but GTO was revisited in the manga sequel GTO: Shonan 14 Days, the upcoming spin-off GT-R and its predecessor Shōnan Junai-gumi. Vertical releases Shōnan Junai-gumi and Shonan 14 DAYS in North America. Tokyopop released the original manga in English.

Update: Discotek Media also revealed on Wednesday that it has slated its release of Lupin the 3rd: Mystery of Mamo and Mad Bull 34 for February 26, 2013.

Update: Properly characterized Shōnan Junai-gumi as a predecessor. Thanks, Gilles Poitras.
