Sentai Filmworks Adds AKB0048 TV Anime

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Idol sci-fi anime from Satelight to get home video release later this year

The North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Wednesday that it has licensed the AKB0048, the television anime inspired by and starring the all-female idol group AKB48. The company will release the 26-episode series soon through "select digital outlets" and then later this year on home video.

The show's story is set in post-apocalyptic, totalitarian future, when a group called AKB0048 assumes the name of a legendary idol group from the past. AKB0048 holds guerrilla concerts to combat the Super Galactic Alliance's Entertainment Prohibition Law.

Mari Okada (anohana, HanaIro, Toradora!) is supervising and writing the scripts, and Mikan Ehime (Macross Frontier, Gravion Zwei) designed the characters. Yoshimasa Hiraike (Working!!/Wagnaria!!, Amagami SS, Sketchbook ~full color'S~) is the actual hands-on director of the anime at Satelight (Macross Frontier, Aquarion, Shugo Chara!).

Shōji Kawamori, the co-creator of the Macross franchise and the co-director of Macross: Do You Remember Love?, is the project planner and the chief director, and Toshimichi Ootsuki (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone) is the executive producer. AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto himself is planning and supervising the project.

The 13-episode first season premiered in April 2012. The 13-episode sequel series AKB0048 next stage premiered in Japan on January 5. Crunchyroll is streaming AKB0048 next stage outside of Japan as it airs. The site has not yet announced if it will also be streaming the first season.
