Wolf Children Wins Japan Academy Prize

Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children film won the animation category in the 36th Annual Japan Academy Prizes on Friday. The film was competing against Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, A Letter to Momo, Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki, and One Piece Film Z. The Best Picture of the Year honor went to the live-action film Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerutte yo (The Kirishima Thing).
Wolf Children also won the Animation Film Award at the 67th Annual Mainichi Film Awards last month.
Actor Hiroshi Abe won the Best Actor award for the live-action adaptation of Mari Yamazaki's Thermae Romae manga.
Erika Sawajiri and Shinobu Terajima received Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nods, respectively, for the manga-based live-action film Helter Skelter, but neither won the award. Mitsuo Harada received a nomination for his art design on Thermae Romae, but did not win the award. Late actress Mitsuko Mori (Princess Mononoke's Hii-sama) was honored with a President's Special Award. AKB48's Yuko Oshima was honored in the actors' class of the special Wadai Shō award for her work in the live-action film adaptation of Shohei Manabe's Ushijima the Loan Shark manga.
The Animation of the Year category was only created six years ago. Last year, Goro Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's From Up On Poppy Hill (Kokuriko-Zaka Kara) won the award. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tekkonkinkreet, Ponyo, Summer Wars, and The Secret World of Arrietty were the previous winners. Before that, Studio Ghibli won the overall Picture of the Year Award for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
